Martin Tam, CEO

Martin was appointed Chief Executive Officer on November 1, 2005.  Prior to this appointment, he was in Senior Management, with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), a role that he has held since 1999.

In Montreal, Martin joined one of the largest financial institutions in Canada in June 1989.  He worked on the banking side for three years before being promoted to the Discount Brokerage arm in Toronto as an Investment Representative in 1993.  For the next 4 years, he gained valuable experience on the investment side.  This experience helped to earn him a promotion into the Capital Market area where he went through the Dealer Trainee Program.

In 1997, Martin returned back to the brokerage side of the business in a management capacity managing a group of Investment Representatives.  Martin eventually went on to manage a department of more than 100 people.  Martin’s experience and contribution since the beginning when it was as a tiny unknown business unit through its spectacular growth into one of the largest Discount Brokerage and Online Trading firms in Canada has to date proven to be invaluable to 3i Financial Group Inc.  Martin was also involved on the project management side of the business assisting the bank with reengineering operations in order to gain efficiencies.

Martin graduated from Concordia University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  He possesses the CIM designation (Canadian Investment Manager), and has completed many professional management and insurance courses from The Canadian Securities Institute and The Investment Funds Institute of Canada.

Martin also volunteered his time by being on several committees. Of note, was his participation in the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC), a think tank that researched the marketplace to come up with a proposal for Executive Counsel that was to consider the implementation of key issues for the Global International Services.  He has also served on the Diversity Committee on Women who’s mandate was understanding the key issues as they related to women in the workforce and in upper management.

In his spare time, Martin shares his experience by running an organization called Starkiz (www.starkiz.org).  Through Starkiz he teaches fundamental basketball and life skills to children between the ages of 6- 12 years old.  Martin has been involved with this non-profit organization for the last 8 years.
